Bluestone
A hard-wearing grey-blue basalt, prized in Australia for paving, pool coping, steps and heritage surfaces.
Bluestone is a type of basalt quarried in Victoria and widely used across Australia for paving, pool surrounds, steps, kerbing and feature walls. Sawn, honed and flamed finishes are common, and its grey-blue tone suits both heritage and contemporary designs.
Bluestone has natural pores and small vesicles that can trap oil, food, leaf and tannin stains, so sealing helps reduce staining and keeps it easier to clean. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner for routine care, and choose an outdoor-rated cleaner for mould, algae and efflorescence on exterior paving.

Step 1 What finish is your bluestone?

Your finish
Flamed bluestone
Flamed bluestone is torch-treated to create a rough, matte surface with a slightly rippled texture that offers good grip underfoot. This finish tends to be fairly porous, so sealing helps reduce staining, with options for a Natural Look, a Colour Enhanced look, or a High Gloss finish.

Honed bluestone
Honed bluestone has a smooth, flat surface with a soft matte sheen, achieved by grinding back the stone without polishing it to a shine. It can be moderately absorbent, so sealing is worth considering, suiting either a Natural Look or a Colour Enhanced look.

Polished bluestone
Polished bluestone is ground and buffed to a glossy, reflective surface that shows off the stone's natural depth and colour variation. It is generally less porous than other finishes, though sealing can still help with stain resistance, offering a Natural Look or a Colour Enhanced look.

Sandblasted bluestone
Sand blasted bluestone is treated with high-pressure sand to create a textured, slip-resistant surface with a consistent matte look. This finish can be quite porous, so sealing helps reduce staining, with a Natural Look, Colour Enhanced look, or High Gloss finish all possible.

Textured bluestone
Textured bluestone refers to the stone's natural, unaltered surface, which is uneven and tactile with a rustic character. It tends to be absorbent, so sealing helps reduce staining and is best suited to a Natural Look that keeps the original appearance intact.
