Ceramic tiles
Glazed or unglazed clay tiles used widely on floors, walls and splashbacks in homes and businesses.
Ceramic tiles are made from fired clay and are most often glazed, giving a hard, low-porosity surface for bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and splashbacks. Unglazed ceramic and textured finishes are more absorbent and can hold dirt more readily.
Glazed ceramic rarely needs sealing, so care focuses on the grout and on cleaning. Cementitious grout lines are porous and stain easily, so sealing the grout helps reduce staining and makes it easier to keep clean. Use a pH-neutral cleaner for routine care and a dedicated tile cleaner for soap scum, grease and grout haze.

Step 1 What finish is your ceramic tiles?

Your finish
Honed ceramic tiles
Honed ceramic tiles have a smooth, matte surface achieved by grinding back any shine, giving a soft, flat appearance. This finish can be somewhat porous, so a natural look sealer helps protect the surface while keeping the original matte appearance unchanged.

Lappato (semi-polished) ceramic tiles
Lapato, or semi-polished, ceramic tiles have a partially buffed surface that creates a subtle sheen alongside softer matte patches for a textured, dimensional look. This mixed finish can trap grime in the duller sections, so regular cleaning helps keep the contrast between sheen and matte areas looking its best.

Polished ceramic tiles
Polished ceramic tiles are buffed to a smooth, reflective surface with a glossy, glass-like appearance. These tiles tend to be fairly dense, and a natural look sealer can help guard against stains without altering the glossy finish, though care should be taken as polished surfaces can be slippery when wet.

Rough / highly textured ceramic tiles
Rough or highly textured ceramic tiles have an uneven, grippy surface, often used to improve slip resistance underfoot. Because these textures can hold onto dirt and grime, a high sheen coating sealer can help make cleaning easier while adding a bit of surface shine.

Textured ceramic tiles
Textured ceramic tiles have a naturally patterned, slightly uneven surface rather than a flat, smooth one. This texture can collect dust and grime in its grooves, so routine cleaning is the main focus, with sealing generally aimed at protecting the grout lines between tiles.
