Granite
A hard, crystalline igneous stone used for benchtops, floors, stairs and outdoor paving.
Granite is a durable igneous stone made up of interlocking mineral crystals, available in a wide range of colours. It is a popular choice for kitchen benchtops, floors, stair treads and paving, and comes in polished, honed and flamed finishes.
Granite is relatively dense, but porosity varies between types, and lighter granites in particular can absorb oil, wine and water marks. Sealing helps reduce staining and makes spills easier to wipe up. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, and use a poultice for deeper oil or organic stains.

Step 1 What finish is your granite?

Your finish
Flamed granite
This finish is created by torching the granite surface, leaving it rough, matte and slip resistant underfoot. It tends to be more porous, so sealing can suit a colour enhanced, high gloss or natural look depending on the finish you prefer.

Your finish
Honed granite
Honed granite has a smooth, flat matte surface achieved by grinding back the shine, giving it a soft, low glare feel. It absorbs more than polished stone, so sealing can work well as a colour enhanced or natural look finish.

Polished granite
Polished granite is ground and buffed to a glossy, reflective surface that shows off the stone's natural pattern and depth. It is fairly dense and less porous, so sealing mainly helps protect against staining while keeping a colour enhanced or natural look.

Sandblasted granite
Sand blasted granite is treated with high pressure sand to create a textured, slightly rough, matte surface with added grip. This more porous finish benefits from sealing to help reduce staining while keeping a natural look.

Textured granite
Textured granite keeps the stone's natural uneven surface, offering better grip and a rustic, tactile feel underfoot. Its rougher profile can trap dirt and moisture, so sealing helps reduce staining while maintaining a natural look.

Tumbled granite
Tumbled granite is processed to create a worn, softened edge and a slightly pitted, textured surface with an aged look. It tends to be quite porous, so sealing can help reduce staining while supporting a colour enhanced, high gloss or natural look finish.
