Saltillo
Handmade Mexican terracotta tiles with rustic edges and warm, variegated orange and clay tones.
Saltillo tiles are handmade clay tiles from Saltillo in Mexico, sun-dried and kiln-fired at low temperatures. Their irregular edges, warm colour variation and occasional imperfections give a rustic, Mediterranean look to living areas, kitchens and verandahs.
Saltillo is very soft and highly porous, so it readily absorbs water, oil, food and grout. Sealing before and after grouting helps reduce staining and grout haze, and a coating sealer can add a protective sheen. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid harsh acids, which can damage the clay.

Step 1 What finish is your saltillo?

Your finish
Textured saltillo
This is the normal, rustic surface of saltillo tiles, with a slightly uneven, earthy texture rather than an applied treatment. It tends to be quite porous and absorbent, so sealing helps reduce staining, and suits a Natural Look, Colour Enhanced or High Gloss finish depending on the appearance you prefer.
