Sandstone
A warm, porous sedimentary stone used for paving, pool surrounds, walls and heritage buildings.
Sandstone is made of sand grains bound together by natural minerals, and is found in many Australian homes and heritage buildings. It is used for paving, pool coping, steps, cladding and garden walls, in sawn, honed, split-face and textured finishes.
Sandstone is highly porous, so it absorbs water, oil, leaf and tannin stains, and is prone to mould, algae and efflorescence outdoors. A penetrating sealer helps reduce water uptake and staining and makes cleaning easier. Use a gentle, suitable cleaner and avoid high-pressure washing too close to the surface, which can erode soft stone.

Step 1 What finish is your sandstone?

Your finish
Flamed sandstone
Flamed sandstone is heated with a torch until the surface flakes away, leaving a rough, matte texture with plenty of grip underfoot. This finish tends to be quite porous, so it suits a Colour Enhanced look to bring out warmth, a Natural Look for no visual change, or a High Gloss coating for added shine.

Your finish
Honed sandstone
Honed sandstone is ground back to a smooth, flat, low-sheen surface without the reflective shine of polishing. It still absorbs moisture fairly easily, so a Natural Look sealer keeps the look unchanged while a Colour Enhanced option can help deepen and enrich the stone's natural tones.

Polished sandstone
Polished sandstone is ground and buffed to a smooth, glossy surface that highlights the stone's natural patterning. Although less porous than other finishes, it can still benefit from sealing, with a Natural Look preserving the existing shine or a Colour Enhanced sealer deepening the tones further.

Rough / highly textured sandstone
Rough or highly textured sandstone keeps its natural, uneven quarried surface, offering good slip resistance for outdoor areas. This finish is generally quite absorbent, suiting a Colour Enhanced sealer to enrich colour, a Natural Look for no visible change, or a High Gloss coating for extra shine.

Sandblasted sandstone
Sand blasted sandstone is treated with high-pressure sand to create a consistent, slightly rough, matte texture. It tends to be porous and absorbent, so a Natural Look sealer helps protect without altering appearance, while Colour Enhanced or High Gloss options can deepen colour or add shine.

Textured sandstone
Textured sandstone shows the stone's normal, naturally uneven surface, which helps reduce slipperiness in wet areas. It can be quite absorbent, so sealing with a Natural Look keeps things as they are, while Colour Enhanced or High Gloss options can enrich colour or add a shiny coating.

Your finish
Tumbled sandstone
Tumbled sandstone is mechanically worn to soften its edges and surface, giving it an aged, slightly irregular texture. This finish is usually quite porous, so a Natural Look sealer protects without changing appearance, while Colour Enhanced or High Gloss options can deepen colour or add a glossy coating.
